Just like a messy desk, digital clutter can drain your focus and waste valuable time. If your devices are disorganized, your desktop is cluttered, your inbox is overflowing, and your notifications won’t stop buzzing, you’re working way harder than you need to.
Here’s the good news: You don’t need a full tech overhaul to fix it. A few small changes can create space for you to think clearly and save you time every single day.
1. Clean Off Your Home Screen
Start simple: delete apps you never use and group the rest by category, such as work tools, personal, communication, and finance. If it’s not helpful or used very often, it doesn’t need to be front and center on your device. Less distraction means faster decisions.
2. Create a Folder System That Makes Sense
Set up folders that match how you think and work – whether that’s by project, client, or task type. Use clear titles and be consistent when naming files so they’re searchable. Once a month, do a quick cleanup to delete, archive, or reorganize.
3. Take Control of Your Inbox
Email can quietly become one of your biggest time sucks. Create folders for key areas (e.g., clients, admin, billing) and use rules or filters to sort incoming emails automatically. Unsubscribe from anything you haven’t read in weeks. You may not make it to “Inbox Zero”, but you’ll have fewer missed emails.
4. Tidy Up Your Browser
If your browser is sluggish or full of distractions, it’s time to reset. Organize your bookmarks by theme or frequency, delete any that are outdated, and remove extensions you don’t use anymore. Clear your cache regularly – it will speed things up and solve more issues than you think. Check out our social post that shows you how to clear the cache for your particular browser. 5. Use a Password Manager (Please)
If you’re still keeping passwords on sticky notes 😲 or in your Notes app… it’s time. A password manager stores everything securely, helps you create stronger logins, and keeps your accounts safer. Bonus: most of them work across devices and browsers.
6. Turn Off Distractions
You don’t need to be pinged every time someone likes a post or sends you a message. Go into your settings and turn off non-essential notifications. I recommend setting the device in “Do Not Disturb” mode when you’re doing focused work. It’s one of the fastest ways to reclaim your time.
7. Back Up Your Files
Don’t wait until you lose something important. Set up automatic backups – whether that’s to a cloud service (easiest) or an external drive. This one task can save you hours (and so much stress) down the road.
8. Keep Your Devices Healthy
Make sure your system is up to date. Software and security updates don’t just fix bugs; they keep your tech running smoothly and protect your data. Run virus scans regularly and remove programs you no longer use.
Your Weekly Habit:
Set a 15-minute appointment each week to review and reset – that’s all it takes to stay on top of digital clutter. A clean digital workspace gives you mental clarity and enables you to work faster.
